Excerpts
They were unmoving. Their eyes stared forwards, ignoring her question. They didn’t care. They never would, not anymore.

Still, she repeated herself. She insisted on manners when people dealt with her and offered the same consideration back.

“Would you like sugar or sweetener?” she asked. “Or are you sweet enough?”
The last comment made her chuckle. It always had, even when it had been her father asking her, as he often did before his untimely death.

They still didn’t answer or look at her. She waited for a few more seconds, then put the small China bowl (only the best for her guests) down.

“That’s fine,” she said, keeping her impatience to herself. “I’ll let you do it. Don’t let it get cold.”
Wendy learned not to cry.

Tears were the visible signs that her parents’ treatment was working. Tears were their trophies, held high with smug sneers and the sharp cuts of words. Wendy didn’t want them to enjoy themselves. She didn’t want them to know it affected her. As she learned to hold the tears and feelings back, they began to be covered by the mental swallowing down of emotions. They were dulled. Smothered.

Wendy could still smile, but the warmth behind it cooled, then chilled.
“No!”
Wendy had been slumped in her chair up to that point, but sat up straight at the thought of her parents being involved.
“Is there a problem?”
Wendy was flustered. Yes, there was a huge problem, and she didn’t mean them. But they would only add to the issues.
“I…”
She couldn’t. She couldn’t.
She had to.
“I killed Samuel Thomson.”
